Before you enquire

Is the Powerwall 3 right for your house?

Not every home needs one, and we'd rather tell you now than after a site visit.

It's the right fit if

  • You're on single phase. Most South African homes are. The Powerwall 3 backs up the whole house rather than a handful of circuits somebody chose for you in 2022.
  • Your house pulls hard. 11 kW continuous and 185 A motor start means aircon, pool pump, borehole and electric oven, not just lights and the fridge.
  • You want one company to phone. On most systems the inverter and the battery are separate products with separate warranties and separate claim routes. Here it's one unit and one warranty, so there's no argument about whether the inverter or the battery caused a fault. We lodge the claim and, because Tesla reimburses us for warranty labour, we don't invoice you for the callout or the swap.
  • You already have panels. The inverter and battery get replaced. Your array stays where it is.

It's the wrong fit if

  • You need backup on all three phases. You can run one Powerwall 3 per phase and offset your bill across all three while the grid is up. During an outage only the nominated backup phase carries loads, so three units gives you 40.5 kWh installed but 13.5 kWh you can actually use. If whole-house three phase backup is what you want, a Sigenergy or Victron system does it properly and we'll quote you one.
  • You're buying on cost per stored kilowatt-hour. BSL and Freedom Won will be cheaper. You're paying for integration, the app and the warranty, and that's a fair thing to decide against.

Priced separately: SSEG registration from R8,500, and any remedial work needed to bring an existing installation up to standard. Both are quoted in writing before anything starts. See below.

SSEG registration, from R8,500

Every grid-tied system under 100 kVA has to be registered with Eskom or your municipality, whether or not it exports. That's a separate job from the installation and we price it separately, because it involves an on-site compliance inspection, an NRS 097-2 inverter test report, a single line diagram, a Certificate of Compliance and the submission itself. Where an existing installation needs remedial work to pass, we quote that in writing before we start. More on SSEG registration

Already have solar

The Powerwall 3 replaces your inverter and battery. The panels stay.

Thousands of South African homes bought solar during the load shedding years, and plenty of those installers have since shut their doors. The panels still work fine. The inverter's faulting, the batteries have lost half their capacity, and nobody answers the phone.

You don't have to start again.

  • Your inverter trips the moment the grid dropsGateway 2 handles the changeover in under a second, and 11 kW runs the whole house rather than three circuits somebody picked years ago.
  • Your batteries are down to half capacity after three yearsLFP chemistry, ten year Tesla warranty, 70% capacity guaranteed at the end of it.
  • Your array is smaller than your bill needsUp to 20 kW DC across 6 MPPTs, so you can add panels later without buying another inverter.

Why this unit

What makes the Powerwall 3 different

Whole home, not selected circuits

Most batteries back up a handful of circuits. With 11 kW continuous and 185 A motor start, one Powerwall 3 runs an average South African home including the aircon and the borehole pump.

Solar and battery inverter in one box

Panels connect straight to it via DC coupling. No separate solar inverter, fewer components, less that can fail, and a cleaner wall.

Sub-second changeover

Gateway 2 detects grid loss and disconnects in under a second. No reboots, no lost work, no alarm false-positives.

Storm Watch

Tesla monitors the forecast for your location and charges to 100% before severe weather arrives. Equally useful ahead of a load shedding escalation.

Scales to 54 kWh

Start with one and add up to four units in parallel for 54 kWh and 44 kW, enough for the largest homes or a small commercial site.

One warranty, one claim

Ten years and 70% capacity guaranteed, with unlimited cycles for solar self-consumption, time-of-use shifting and backup. One warranty covers the inverter and the battery together, and on a valid claim you pay us nothing for labour or travel because Tesla reimburses us directly.

South African reality

Built for load shedding, and for what comes after it

Load shedding is why most South Africans buy a battery, but tariffs are why they keep it. Eskom is rolling out time-of-use pricing to residential customers, and the Tesla app charges from the grid at off-peak rates and discharges during peak automatically.

A single Powerwall 3 carries an average home through a Stage 6 slot without touching the geyser schedule. During daylight your panels keep generating, so the battery refills between slots.

How we work

From first call to Certificate of Compliance

Free design assessment

We inspect your distribution board, roof space, and daytime versus evening load profile, and review three to six months of bills to size the system properly. Usually 45 to 60 minutes. This is a design and quoting visit, not a repair or fault-finding visit, see the terms below.

System design and quotation

Our system designers build the design around your peak load and backup priorities, and future-proof it so it can expand later without rework. You get a line-item quote.

SSEG registration, quoted separately

For grid-tied installations we handle the Small-Scale Embedded Generation submission with your municipality or Eskom, from R8,500. That covers the compliance inspection, the NRS 097-2 test report, the single line diagram and the submission. Municipal and Eskom fees vary by area and we confirm the current figure for yours in your quote.

Installation

Technician-installed and electrician-certified. All wiring, mounting, breaker sizing and earthing to SANS 10142-1 and NRS 097-2-3, then inspected and signed off by our Master Installation Electrician. A typical residential install takes one to two working days.

Commissioning and app setup

We configure Gateway 2, set your backup reserve and load priorities, then walk you through the Tesla app on your own phone.

CoC and handover

You receive a SANS 10142-1 Certificate of Compliance signed by our Master Installation Electrician, full system documentation, and the ten year Tesla warranty registered in your name.

Ongoing support

We monitor performance remotely, coordinate warranty claims directly with Tesla on your behalf, and answer the phone. For the life of the system, not the first year.

Synergy installs Tesla, Sigenergy, Victron, Sunsynk and Deye, BSL and Freedom Won. We design the right system for each site, not the most expensive one.

10 year Tesla warranty

Ten years with a guaranteed 70% minimum capacity, and unlimited cycles for solar self-consumption, time-of-use shifting and backup. Tesla repairs, replaces or refunds at their election. We lodge and manage the claim rather than handing you a support number, and we don't bill you for our labour or travel on a valid claim because Tesla settles that with us.

Compliance and CoC

Every installation is signed off with a SANS 10142-1 Certificate of Compliance covering the work we carried out, issued by our Master Installation Electrician. That's an installation CoC, not a whole-house certificate. If your existing wiring needs work to comply, we'll tell you what and quote it separately. Jacques Venter holds the PV GreenCard and Synergy is registered on the programme.

Monitoring and support

Remote diagnostics for the life of the system. If we spot an underperforming string or a faulty unit, we contact you first.

Financing

Three ways to pay

Cash

Fastest payback and maximum lifetime saving. No finance cost, and every kilowatt-hour goes straight to your bottom line.

Instalment finance

Spread the cost through a partner provider and own the system outright at the end of the term. Most people find the repayment is partly offset by the drop in their Eskom bill.

Rental asset finance

No deposit. A fixed monthly rental that usually compares well with your current electricity spend, with the option to take ownership at the end.

All finance is facilitated through accredited South African providers and subject to credit assessment.

Frequently asked

Powerwall 3 questions

How much does a Powerwall 3 cost in South Africa?
R169,900 including VAT for the Powerwall 3 and Gateway 2, installed with a Certificate of Compliance. That's the same price whether it's a new installation or you're replacing an existing inverter and battery, because Gateway 2 is the AC combiner and handles the integration into your distribution board either way. Packages that include solar panels start at R216,900. SSEG registration is priced separately from R8,500.
Is the price different if I already have solar?
No. The Powerwall 3 and Gateway 2 package is R169,900 either way. Gateway 2 does the AC combining and board integration whether or not there was an inverter there before, so the work is much the same. If you have panels already, they connect straight to the Powerwall's MPPTs and you don't pay for an array you already own. If your existing installation has problems beyond the inverter and battery, we'll find those during the assessment and quote them separately rather than folding them in quietly.
Is SSEG registration included in the price?
No, and you should be sceptical of anyone who says it is. Registration is a separate job from the installation. It needs an on-site compliance inspection, an NRS 097-2 inverter test report, a single line diagram, a Certificate of Compliance and the submission to Eskom or your municipality. We handle the whole process from R8,500. If an existing installation needs remedial work to pass, we quote that in writing before we start. Municipal and Eskom fees vary by area and change from time to time, so we confirm the current figure for yours.
What does a free site assessment actually include?
A free assessment is a design and quoting visit for a new or upgraded system. We measure your distribution board and roof space, review your bills, work out your load profile and quote a system. It runs about 45 to 60 minutes and is free within our service radius around Centurion, Table View and Polokwane. It does not include fault-finding, testing, diagnostics or any hands-on work on an existing installation. If your system is faulting and you need it diagnosed, that's a diagnostic visit from R1,950, credited against the repair if you proceed within 90 days.
Can I install a Powerwall 3 on a three phase house?
Yes, and it works well while the grid is up, but there's a limitation you need to understand before you spend the money. You install one Powerwall 3 per phase. Each one offsets the consumption on its own phase, so across three units you're reducing your whole bill.

During an outage it's different. Only the phase nominated as the backup phase carries loads. The units on the other two phases stop, and only the solar wired to the backup phase's Powerwall keeps charging. So three Powerwalls on a three phase house is 40.5 kWh installed and 13.5 kWh you can actually use during load shedding, on one phase of the house.

There's a wiring consequence too. An existing three phase grid-tied inverter has to connect ahead of the Gateway rather than on the backup side, because the backup side only carries one live phase during an outage and a three phase inverter that loses two phases will alarm out.

None of that makes it a bad system, it just makes it the wrong system for someone who wants the whole house covered. If that's you, a Sigenergy or Victron three phase setup does it properly and we install both.
Can I add a Powerwall 3 to my existing solar system?
Usually it replaces your inverter rather than joining it. The Powerwall 3 is DC coupled with the inverter built in, so your panels connect straight to it and the old inverter comes off the wall. You keep the panels and the mounting, which is where most of your original money went. If you have a healthy hybrid inverter you'd rather keep, we can AC couple instead, though you'll be paying for two inverters to do one job. Our system designers will tell you which makes sense for your site before we quote. If your original installer has vanished, start with a My Solar Friend rescue audit.
Will it run my geyser and my aircon?
One unit delivers 11 kW continuous with 185 A motor start, which covers a geyser, an aircon, a pool pump or a borehole on an average home. Running several of those at once, or a large ducted aircon plus an electric oven, may need load management or a second unit. We measure your actual peak during the site assessment rather than guessing.
How soon can you install?
It depends on stock at the time you order, so we confirm it in writing in your quote rather than publishing a number here that might not hold. These are imported units and lead times move with shipping, so anyone quoting you a fixed turnaround before checking stock is guessing. What we can tell you is that once the unit is on hand the installation itself is one to two working days, and we book the date with you rather than phoning on the morning.
What exactly does the ten year warranty cover?
Tesla warrants the Powerwall against defects for ten years from installation, and guarantees it will still hold at least 70% of its 13.5 kWh capacity at the end of that period. Cycles are unlimited for solar self-consumption, time-of-use shifting and backup, which covers how almost every South African home uses it. Other applications are capped at 37.8 MWh of total throughput instead. If it fails, Tesla will repair it, replace it with an equivalent unit which may be new or refurbished, or refund the market value, at their election. A repair or replacement doesn't extend the original ten years. The warranty is separate from our own workmanship guarantee on the installation.
Will I be charged for a warranty callout?
Not on a valid claim. As a Tesla Certified Installer we're reimbursed by Tesla for warranty labour, so we don't pass a callout or swap-out charge to you. That's our commitment, not a clause in Tesla's warranty document, and it's worth knowing the difference because it means you can hold us to it directly. Where it doesn't apply: if the fault falls outside the warranty, we quote you normally. Tesla excludes lightning, surge, flood, fire, theft and damage from misuse, and lightning in particular is not unusual in Gauteng, so surge protection and the right insurance cover still matter. If we attend and the fault turns out to be something other than the Powerwall, that's a normal repair and we'll tell you before we start work rather than after.
Does the Powerwall need an internet connection?
Yes, and this one is worth understanding before you buy. Tesla needs remote access to push firmware updates, and the warranty terms say that if your Powerwall isn't connected for an extended period, or was never registered with Tesla, they may not honour the full ten years. The guaranteed minimum in that case is four years from installation. So a Powerwall on a property with no reliable connectivity is a warranty risk, not just a monitoring inconvenience. We register every unit during commissioning and we'll tell you during the assessment if we think your connectivity is going to be a problem.
Can I rely on it for medical equipment?
No, and we won't tell you otherwise. Tesla's warranty explicitly states the Powerwall isn't intended as a primary or backup supply for life-support systems or other medical equipment, and they disclaim liability for that use. In practice a Powerwall keeps a CPAP or an oxygen concentrator running through an ordinary outage, and plenty of people buy one partly for that reason. But it is a battery with a finite charge and no guarantee attached to that use, so if someone in your home depends on powered medical equipment you need a dedicated backup for that device as well, not instead of it. Talk to us and we'll design around it honestly.
What happens if I move house?
The warranty transfers to a new owner who can show proof of ownership, so it stays with the property and is worth something at resale. If you want to take the Powerwall with you, note that Tesla's terms say removing and reinstalling it at a different location without their written consent can void the warranty. So it's a conversation to have with us before the moving truck arrives, not after.
What happens if my Powerwall fails? Who do I actually call?
You call us, on the same number you called to buy it. We diagnose first, because a decent share of faults are firmware, configuration or comms and get resolved on site without anything being removed. Where a fault can't be resolved on site, the unit is swapped rather than repaired on your wall, and Tesla covers the collection and the swap-out of the faulty unit. We lodge the claim through our supply chain, so you're not chasing anyone or sitting in an overseas support queue.

We deliberately don't publish a turnaround time. These are imported units and anyone quoting you a guaranteed number of days is quoting you something they don't control. What we'll commit to is that you deal with us throughout and we tell you where things stand rather than going quiet.

It's worth understanding why this works the way it does. Tesla relies on its certified installer network for after-sales and pays installers for warranty callouts, which is exactly why buying from a certified installer matters. An installation done by someone outside that network can void the warranty entirely under Tesla's own terms. And if we ever became unreachable, Tesla South Africa is on 087 550 3480 and the warranty stays with the unit, transferring to a new owner with proof of ownership.
Do I get a Certificate of Compliance, and what does it cover?
Yes, issued by our Master Installation Electrician. It's important to be clear about what it is: a CoC for the work we installed, not a certificate for your whole house. It covers the Powerwall, the Gateway, our wiring, our earthing and our connection into your board. It doesn't certify pre-existing wiring elsewhere in the property that we never touched. If we find non-compliant work during the assessment we'll tell you and quote the repair separately, and if something is unsafe we won't sign off around it. A full-house CoC is a separate job with a separate price, and we can do that too if you need one for a property sale.
Do I need to tell my insurer?
Yes. Most South African household policies require you to declare a solar and battery installation, and several require a valid CoC before they'll cover it. We issue an installation CoC for the work we do, which is what insurers normally ask for on a new installation. Some insurers ask for a full-house CoC instead, so it's worth checking exactly which they want before you assume the one in your file is enough.
Is the Tesla Powerwall 3 worth it in South Africa?
Depends what you're buying it for, and we'd rather you knew before we quote. A battery on its own doesn't generate electricity, it stores it, so a Powerwall with no solar shifts your usage rather than reducing it. What it buys you is uptime, and for most people that's the point. The financial case comes from the solar. Paired with panels you're generating power at a fixed cost while Eskom's tariffs keep climbing above inflation, and that's where the payback maths works. If someone quotes you a five year payback on a battery-only system, ask them to show you the numbers.
Does the Powerwall 3 work during load shedding?
Yes, and it's what the unit is built for. Gateway 2 detects grid loss and disconnects from the utility in under a second, so your lights, fridge, Wi-Fi, alarm and computer stay on without a reboot. With 11 kW continuous and 185 A motor start, one unit runs an average South African home rather than a few selected circuits, so you're not choosing between the aircon and the pool pump. During daylight your panels keep generating, which means the battery refills between slots and you can ride out consecutive stages. On a three phase supply, backup is limited to the nominated backup phase, so the rest of the house stays down.
How many Powerwall 3 units do I need?
One unit covers most single phase homes. 13.5 kWh gets an average household through an evening and overnight, and 11 kW handles the peak load. You need a second if your evening consumption is high, if you want to ride out a full day of outages, or if you regularly run several heavy loads at once. Up to four can run in parallel for 54 kWh and 44 kW. We don't guess at this. During the assessment we look at three to six months of bills and your actual evening usage, because oversizing wastes your money and undersizing means you're disappointed on the first bad night.
How does the Powerwall 3 compare to a Sunsynk or Deye system?
Different products for different buyers, and we install all of them. A Sunsynk or Deye hybrid inverter with a separate battery will cost you meaningfully less for similar storage, and the range covers three phase properly. What you give up is integration. You're buying two products from two manufacturers with two warranties and two claim routes, and if something fails there's often an argument about which component caused it. The Powerwall 3 is one unit with one warranty covering both halves, so a fault is Tesla's to resolve rather than an argument between two suppliers, and our labour on a valid claim is settled by Tesla rather than billed to you. If budget is the deciding factor, we'll quote you Sunsynk or Deye and tell you so.
How does the Powerwall 3 compare to a SigenStor?
Both are strong systems and we're approved installers for both. The Powerwall 3 gives you higher single-unit output, Storm Watch, the best app in the category, and one warranty covering inverter and battery together. SigenStor is modular, expands more flexibly, offers integrated DC EV charging, and does proper three phase backup. If you're on three phase and want whole-house cover during an outage, SigenStor is the better answer and we'll say so. More on SigenStor
Can I add more solar panels later?
Yes, and this is one of the Powerwall 3's better features. It accepts up to 20 kW DC across six MPPTs operating between 60 and 550 V DC, which is far more than most homes install initially. So you can start with 12 panels and add more later without buying another inverter, and the six MPPTs mean you can run strings on different roof orientations without one shaded string dragging the others down. We design the DC side with headroom for exactly this reason, so a later expansion is a panel job rather than a rewire.
How long does the installation take?
A typical residential Powerwall 3 installation takes one to two working days on site. An upgrade replacing an existing inverter and battery is usually at the shorter end, because the cabling and mounting are already there. Adding solar panels extends it depending on array size and roof access. You'll be without power for part of one day while the distribution board is worked on, and we tell you which day and roughly how long during the assessment rather than on the morning.

Free design assessment, no obligation. We'll design a system around your actual usage and your roof, and our Master Installation Electrician issues your SANS 10142-1 Certificate of Compliance.

What a free assessment covers, and what it doesn't

Free: a design and quoting visit. We measure your DB and roof space, review your bills, size a system and quote it. Around 45 to 60 minutes, within our service radius of Centurion, Table View and Polokwane. Further afield we agree travel upfront.

Not free: fault-finding, testing, diagnostics or any hands-on work on an existing installation. If your current system is faulting and you need it diagnosed rather than replaced, that's a My Solar Friend diagnostic visit from R1,950, and the fee comes off the repair if you go ahead within 90 days.

We'd rather be clear about this upfront than turn up and disagree about it on your driveway.
